One thing that makes Halloween truly a spooky holiday are scary ghost stories. It is always fun to take the kids, sit them around a campfire if you can manage it and re-tell spooky stories. Make certain you bring plenty of marshmallows to roast and hot dogs. Take a drive and venture past 100 year old houses: many times such places can be found when traversing down country roads. Also don't forget: many communities manufacture their own brand of fun by putting together there own spooky houses. If no one in your community has thought of it yet, you might devise one on your own.
Make sure it is plenty dark and the characters inside are all people you know and trust. Children should not be so young as they cannot understand the intent of the spooky house. In this regard, best to keep the little tykes entertained with treats rather than tricks. If you are unsure about how to go about producing your own haunted house do a search of the Internet and find out how others have put together their scary venues. That said there are plenty of non-practical solutions to places that are scary or haunted. Persons who've visited Paris will testify to the spookiness of the Underground Catacombs: the Catacombs are Paris's underground burial grounds and were open to the public in 1867. Many visitors to Paris have described the underground tunnel as one of the scariest places on the face of the earth. Other graveyards may be scary stomping grounds on Halloween; however you do not want to disrespect the dead by tromping through traditional graveyards.
Visiting an underground site such as the Catacombs, already a tourist attraction and visited since the 19th century may not pose any undue ill-regard for the previously departed. Also if you want to entertain your mind, finding an audio copy of “The War of the Worlds” will certainly do the trick. The radio voice of Orson Welles brings the traditional radio thriller to life with such realism it had many persons at the time believing there was truth to it. The radio account had the Martians invading planet earth one Halloween night in the 1930s and may be the perfect audio accompaniment while driving down deserted country lanes seeking out supposed haunted century old dwellings.
